Reason Behind QuickBooks Error 6177:
If QuickBooks shows an error then there is a good reason for it. There may be several reasons such as:
- QuickBooks could not find the path to the file.
- You may be trying to open the company file from a networked location in multi user mode.
Should this happen to you there is nothing to worry about. We have put together various approaches that should help you overcome this error and continue with your work. It is really simple once you know how.
Approach #1
- If you have been attempting to open a company file in a networked system from a system other than the one on which the company file is stored you will see this error. Simply go to that system where the file is located and work on it from there.
- You can alternatively copy the file to your local desktop and try to access it.
Approach #2
You can try this manual approach and see if it works. It usually does.
- Boot the system on which the QuickBooks company file resides.
- Close QuickBooks
- Find the network descriptor file with the .nd extension. This file is usually in the same folder as the company file with .qb extension.
- Select the file with extension .qbw.nd and delete it.
- Next you launch QuickBooks database server manager and once it is displayed you click on add folder button.
- Navigate to the folder that contains the company files and click on OK.
- Next you have to click on scan button. The box that opens will show a list of all company files connected to QuickBooks database server manager.
- Once the scan is complete you have to click on Close.
- You can now launch QuickBooks and your file should be accessible.
- However, before that you must go to the folder where company file resides and right click to set access permissions and sharing.
- If QuickBooks program resides on server then you must open QuickBooks, click on file, utilities, stop hosting multi user access and click on yes to confirm. Close QuickBooks and then open it again. Now launch QuickBooks, click onfile, utilities, host multi-user access and click on yes and then try to open company file.
Approach #3
- Sometimes the file location may be damaged, which makes QuickBooks keeps crashing. So you can try this approach to find out of it works:
- Create a new folder on C drive and copy company file from its location to this new location. Also move all associated files with extension .lmr, .cfd, .images, etc to this new folder.
- Launch QuickBooks and try to open company file from the new location.
Approach #4
If you are using an older version of QuickBooks then you should try this first. Simply update your old version to the latest versions that have fixes for this error code and the error automatically vanishes.
Approach #5
- Sometimes the problem is with database connection. In this case, instead of trying a manual approach all you have to do is to download QuickBooks connection diagnostic tool and run it.
- It will fix the issue and you will see message “file open successful”
- Once you see this message close the diagnostic tool and try to open the QuickBooks company file. It should open.
