One of the errors in the QuickBooks world of errors is error code 15215. This usually shows up when you try to update QuickBooks payroll or due to some other reason. QuickBooks may show “Error 15215: Unable to verify digital signature”.
Causes Behind QuickBooks 15215 Maintenance Release Error
- This happens when you try to update QuickBooks.
- It can be due to another application in the background. The application may be hogging internet resources and prevents QuickBooks Desktop Payroll from connecting to its server.
- Firewalls may also cause this error since they can block QuickBooks Desktop Payroll from connecting to the update server.
- A virus infection could also cause this error.

If you face this issue you can try any of the approaches detailed below and your problem should be solved.
Approach 1
- Check for background applications using task manager and close them and see if the error disappears.
- If it does not then shut down the computer and reboot it. This will result in previous programs being closed and your update should proceed smoothly.
Approach 2
- If the above did not solve the error and it still shows then you need to run QuickBooks Desktop as Windows Administrator. This is done by following these steps:
- Close QB Desktop.
- On the screen desktop right click on QuickBooks Desktop icon and select “Run as administrator”.
- The screen will show “Do you want to allow this program to make changes to your computer?” in a box. Click on Yes and it should work.
Approach 3
- Close QuickBooks Desktop
- Run internet explorer
- Navigate to tools-internet options and click on the advanced tab
- Pick settings and scroll to “Use TLS 1.0, Use TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2 options.
- Check that USE TLS1.0 is enabled
- Uncheck TLS 1.1 and TLS 1.2
- Click OK.
- Close internet explorer
- Reboot system
- Run QuickBooks and try the update. It should work.
Approach 4
If the above still did not work try this approach:
- Close QuickBooks Desktop
- Hold down Windows Key and press R on the keyboard and in the box type msconfig and press OK
- You get to see the system configuration utility
- Pick selective startup and clear the Load Startup Items checkbox
- Click on OK
- Restart computer
- Run QuickBooks to download tax table
- If this still does not work then restart the computer, run msconfig and select Normal Startup and restart the computer
- Try disabling any antivirus software
- Check firewall and make sure to add QB to exceptions
Approach 5
Run QuickBooks file doctor and it will open firewall ports of Windows that you can configure to add exceptions.
- Type firewall after clicking on the start button in windows and pick windows firewall and right click on advanced settings.
- Right-click inbound rules and pick a new rule and then select a pot and click on next.
- Ensure TCP is selected and the type in port numbers for QuickBooks:
- QuickBooks Desktop 2018: 8019, 56728, 55378-55382
- QuickBooks Desktop 2017: 8019, 56727, 55373-55377
- QuickBooks Desktop 2016: 8019, 56726, 55368-55372
- Click Next and allow the connection and click next
- Ensure all profiles are checked and click next
- Name the rule and select Finish.
- Repeat process for outbound rules.
